For the love of books.

on October 9, 2012

Our family is getting sick again. Texas has a way of jolting your senses back and forth with temperature and weather changes that is highly conducive to colds and allergies. Blah.

We’ve spent most of the night (the non-gross parts) curled up with books and sickly children. K got in on it with his Cars seek and find book. E even sat with a board book upside down and pointed to pictures.

“That that! Yeah. That! Mom Dad that.”

Everything is “that” right now.

I’m glad my kids see us read. I think part of incorporating a love of reading and knowledge lies in more than just reading to your children. (Though you should read to your kids!) I think seeing their parents with a book in their hands is a powerful thing. I remember my mom with a book in her hand way more than the remote. My mother-in-law works at a library.

We are also a family that enjoys knowledge. If my son asks about rhinos, we look up info and videos of rhinos. We talk about the water cycle when it rains. We look up words if we don’t know the meaning. We ask Nana to check out books on whatever his current favorite thing is. Knowledge is powerful.

Hopefully is junk will pass soon. For now we are all going to bury into our books and blankets and try to keep down enough clear liquids to ride this out.
