If it’s not meant to be…

on October 6, 2012

We try to make it to most family, friend, and church events. We really do try. It just isn’t always possible with two kiddos.

Let’s be real for a second…

Kids are gross and unpredictable.

They just are.

Magical, cute, life altering, and gross.

Last night we had planned to meet my in-laws for supper and then head out to an engagement party for our pastor and his soon-to-be wife. We were on the highway and ended up stuck in horrible traffic about a mile up from our exit. Just then we heard a whiny cry from the backseat.

“I have to go pee peeeeeeeee!”

This was followed by holding of the crotch and the wiggling backseat peepee dance.

“Can you hold it bud? We are almost to a gas station. Just a few more minutes.”

It quickly became apparent that he could not hold it. Traffic was moving just enough that peeing roadside was not an option and we were still a ways from the exit. Panicked, I looked for anything of use.

One old, empty water bottle. I desperately tried to convince my three year old to pull his pants down and pee in the bottle.

He was not having this. He cried and squirmed and announced that he had wet his pants. Two minutes later he was sound asleep. Poor kid. He tried. He really did.

Luckily, I have the best in-laws ever. They stopped and got him a pair of pants and underwear and met us at the restaurant.

We made it through dinner and were checking our directions to the party when K gagged and threw up on his shirt and brand new pants.

Sometimes you just have to know when to give up.

We went home, bathed children, and had an at-home date after the kids were in bed. Snuggling on the couch and watching Avengers was perfect.

Dear Family and Friends,

We love you dearly, but we can’t always make it to everything. If we aren’t there, just assume pee, throw-up, or tantrums played a part in it. We are doing everyone a favor by staying home. Really we are.
